Energy Transition Design LLC is an education and technology design studio for the energy transition. Our mission is to make the energy transition more equitable, accessible, and understandable through user-centered and energy-centered design practices. We're based in NYC, but work with clients everywhere.

We produce educational solar carts and accessible PV systems for schools, camps, cultural organizations, community groups, businesses, and more. We also offer a wide range of education and design services that include developing curriculum, technical documentation, products, interfaces, physical objects, museum installations, and interactive experiences; conducting both technical and user research; and much more.

Team

Alex Nathanson
Founder

Alex Nathanson is a designer, technologist, artist, and educator, based in NYC. He has been working with solar power in a wide range of educational, design, and artistic contexts since 2014. He is the author of the book, A History of Solar Power Art and Design, the first interdisciplenary history of photovoltaic creative practice.

Jenny Conrardy

I have been working in the solar industry since 2019 and have had so many great opportunities to learn and grow. I am a fourth year Electrical Apprentice in Wisconsin, and work as a Residential Crew Lead at Arch Solar. I earned my NABCEP PVIP, am an FAA certified Drone Pilot, work with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, trained with Solar Energy International, am a member of Solar for Women, and a member of WRISE (Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy).

Mitchell Dose

Mitchell Dose likes to collaborate with humans on projects large and small. Having studied sculpture, he has helped manifest both the weird and functional through a range of projects; with puppeteers making oversized halloween pageants in Minneapolis, with radical theater performed on boats on the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, making large-scale public art projects alongside teen apprentices with Beam Center in NYC and New Hampshire, and through self-taught cooperative timber-framing and land-based projects in upstate New York. Mitchell was also the owner and operator of a Brooklyn-based metalworking company serving the architectural industry from 2015 - 2021. He is currently studying the intersection of woodworking, boats, and design as a shipwright in Traverse City, Michigan.

Gabriella Cammarata

Gabriella is an industrial designer dedicated to creating playful and creative solutions. Her work focuses on design for children, sustainability, and accessibility through the use of the ethical co-creation process.

Clients

Our clients have included municipal governments, businesses in the sustainable energy industry, non-profits, educational institutions, academic research labs, cultural institutions, and artists (Sherwin Banfield, Jemila Macewan, Pohan Amanda Turner). Some of our past work can be seen here.

History

Energy Transition Design LLC was founded by Alex Nathanson in 2022. The studio grew out of Solar Power for Artists as our client list grew beyond artists and the services we were providing grew beyond just solar power technologies. Solar Power for Artists continues on as our education platform to provide accessible classes and resources for learning about creative applications of photovoltaic solar power and other sustainable energy technologies.
